St Mary’s College is a Catholic Integrated school for girls, offering a Catholic education to students from Intermediate to Secondary, Years 7 to 13 (age 11 to 18 approximately).

Mission Statement

The mission of St Mary's College is to provide a Catholic education in the Mercy tradition of love in action and to prepare students for their role as Christian woman in the world. The person of Jesus, the model of Mary and the truths of the Catholic Church remain always at the heart of school life. Of fundamental concern is the development of each student towards her full potential.

Location

St Mary's College is situated in one of the oldest and most established suburbs, St Mary's Bay. The College is situated in park-like surroundings and overlooks Auckland City and the Waitemata harbour. Students attend the college from many parts of Auckland.

A Brief History

Sisters of Mercy arrived in Auckland in 1850 and began their teaching mission immediately, establishing St Mary's College based on the spiritual values of Mercy.

The Sisters of Mercy were founded in Ireland in 1831 by Catherine McAuley, an extraordinary woman with a deep trust and faith in God. Her leadership and inspiration have been recognised and honoured for many years.

St Mary's College is owned by the Sisters of Mercy, Auckland who have established a Board of Directors which works in conjunction with the Board of Trustees to ensure that the Catholic character and Mercy charism of the school is not only maintained but enhanced and promoted.

St Mary's College stands high on Ponsonby hill surrounded by the leafy suburb of St Mary's Bay. Its 160 year heritage is reflected in its magnificent buildings, including the original St Mary’s Chapel which stands in the grounds of the College and is in regular use by the students.

The College offers extensive modern facilities including; computer suites, a gymnasium, well-equipped Science laboratories, a swimming pool, music suites, a music perfomance hall, tennis, netball and basketball courts as well as a new state-of-the-art library and technology block.

New phases of development saw the addition of new classrooms, computer suites, a learning support area as well as a classroom dedicated to English as a second language, student cafeteria, and a new Art/Religious Studies block dedicated to Sr Loreto.

St Mary’s offers a beautiful environment for students to learn in and a high quality academic education with extensive co-curricular activities.
