Business Studies

Business Studies encompasses a wide range of business based topics.

At Year 10, students will focus on Enterprise Accounting, Enterprise Economics, Enterprise in Action and Financial Literacy.

At Year 11 and 12, students will develop an appreciation of the issues that challenge businesses and stakeholders.  They will be expected to work in a business manner; learning to meet deadlines, working as part of a team, thinking creatively and bringing business flair to their assignments.

The course is designed to develop independent thinking and organisational skills.

Accounting

Accounting is the language of business. Accounting enables the student to understand, process and communicate financial information for an individual and also for a wide variety of business entities.

It provides self-management of personal financial skills essential in daily life.  Students also develop the ability to apply financial knowledge and skills to practical situations.

Economics

Through the study of Economics, students will recognise the significance of different attitudes and values, which influence the choices that are made in society.

At the higher levels students will be able to understand causes, and identify effects and policies that a government may implement to address economic issues.

Students will be expected to use thinking, statistical, investigative and decision-making skills to develop an understanding of their economic environment.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise is an exciting opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to show their business flair and gain experience of business in the real world.

For the past four years St Mary’s Young Enterprise teams have gained several awards, including runner up for best Auckland team in 2007, best Business Plan Oral Presentation in 2008 and Best Product at the Trade Fair in 2009.

In teams students devise and produce a product for sale. They are responsible for the management, marketing and finances of their business.

Any students interested in participating should contact the HOD Commerce.
