Bring It On!

| What is involved? |
Bring It On! is a secondary schools hip hop dance competition, with the aim of providing students with the opportunity to show their talents both in dance and leadership.

Any student who enjoys dancing can audition. |
| Special events |
2008 was the first time St Mary’s College entered this event. The girls had only 10 weeks to audition, choreograph and practice their routine and the final performance made everyone proud. This was entirely student driven and led, with the girls creating an atmosphere of both respect and fun. Next year the student leaders hope to build on what was learnt this year and, hopefully, gain a place in the grand final.

Creative Writing Club

| What is involved? |
Students develop writing skills and enter unpublished work in competitions. it is an opportunity to share writing with other keen writers.
Attend workshops and listen to writers speak about their novels, poems or short stories. |

Cultural Groups

Varied. Arranged by the cultural group leaders in consultation with the group members. |
| What is involved? |
Students in the school are encouraged to join a cultural group. Being of that culture is not a prerequisite. Students work together to prepare a group performance for Mercy Day and the Cultural Evening. Currently there are a French Group, British Group, Chinese Group, Samoan Group, Tongan Group, Indian Group, Korean Group, Irish Group and Filipino Group.
Students organise food stalls on International Day to help raise funds for their Mercy Day performances.

Debating (Auckland Senior Schools Debating Competition)

As required prior to debates.
Evening debates are held at a central venue every 2-3 weeks. Moots are announced one hour prior to debate. Students have one hour to prepare. Junior levels in the competition have more prepared debates.

| What is involved? |
Students develop prepared and impromtu speaking skills, logical thinking skills, confidence and build their general knowledge.
The ASD competition is the main avenue for selection for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Team which debates internationally.
Students can also participate in the Catholic Debating Competition which will help them to prepare for the ASD Competition.

| Who can join? |
Students need to gain experience debating at lower levels in the school to be able to be selected in an ASD team at senior level. Teams are selected on the basis of the pool of talent at any particular level. |

Kidzlit
|

| What is involved? |
Kidzlit is a competition for students with exceptional knowledge of children’s literature. Students meet like-minded students and enjoy the competition.
Students are split into two teams of 4 with a reserve person each for emergencies. They meet weekly to discuss their reading and identify areas that they need to explore.

Quiz Competition night for Auckland Region, usually in May/June. Winners go to the National Championships. St Mary's has been placed 4th two years in a row. |

Librarians

| What is involved? |
Currently there are 58 student librarians. Students are taught the basics of library routines. The seniors are encouraged to take a leadership role with the junior librarians and to assist with supervision in the library.

Peer Support

Thursday morning at form time. Peer leaders meet fortnightly to discuss training. Term 1 is the main focus of the programme. |
| What is involved? |
The programme aims to help Years 7 and 9 to establish skills and relationships to adapt to the new school environment. It is a great opportunity for Year 13s to act as role models and mentors for the junior students.

Stage Challenge

For performers – Three times a week for rehearsals during Terms 1 and 2 and some weekends.
For senior leaders – Regular lunch time and after school meetings and when necessary, some weekends.

| What is involved? |
It is a dance/drama competition that allows students to develop their own eight minute piece of theatre and an opportunity to perform on the big stage in the Aotea Centre in front of a large audience.
Stage Challenge was originally set up to be a positive drug-free and smoke-free event for young people with a focus on student leadership.

Any student from Years 9 to 13 can audition. |

| What is involved? |
Young Enterprise is an exciting opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to show their business flair and gain experience of business in the real world.
In teams students devise a product or service. They are responsible for production, management, marketing and finances of the business.

Students compete against other YES companies in a Business Plan Presentation competition, a Trade Fair and by completing an Annual Report.
For the past few years St. Mary’s College Young Enterprise teams have gained several awards such as: Runner-Up Best Auckland Company in 2007, Best Business Plan Presentation in 2008 and Best Product at the Trade Fair in 2009.
