Eight students were fortunate enough to attend Young, Free and Pasifika at the end of May. Young, Free and Pasifika is a great network that encourages young up and coming Polynesian women to pursue their dreams. This year they explored the theme of “We are more than you see”, highlighting stereotypes and struggles that are commonly experienced by the young Pasifika community.
Amazing guest speakers covered the different core values of Young, Free and Pasifika which are to explore, embrace and seek. Through these core values, those present were able to empathise with the stories being shared by the guest speakers and their struggles. Throughout the day, the students were separated into three different groups – dance, music and spoken word. These three workshops focused their aims on the theme and created a song, dance and a spoken word to be presented at the end - which was amazing.
Young, Free and Pasifika opened up a new perspective not only for the students that attended, but also the teachers and we wish to thank Ms McLeod for giving up her time to join us on the day.
